TIME CAPSULE: “Women had more difficulty than men finding a place to live. Single women were looked upon with suspicion, since “decent” young women lived with their parents until they married. Married women with children, whether or not they or their husbands were defense plant workers, had trouble finding housing as well. It was assumed that all children were noisy and messy and landladies, who had potential renters pounding on their doors daily, could be very fussy. In many cases, rooms were for rent to gentlemen only.”
