NEWSREEL: The president has signed the bill changing the WAAC to the Women”™s Army Corps (WAC), giving its members full Army status and commissioned rank.

TIME CAPSULE: Once more, the recently arrived WACs took precedence over the well-established group of women with an extensive and esteemed history. The editor of the American Journal of Nursing concurred that “establishing hierarchy has always posed challenges, but now, it has become utterly inexplicable and incomprehensible why the women in the two longstanding services, the Army Nurse Corps and the Navy Nurse Corps, all holding officer ranks, were not automatically and rightfully granted the same status as the officers in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC).”
