DIARY: Sunday March 28.1943

Sunday March 28.1943
Dear Diary,

Saw Frankie Barnes, had a driver take me out. He seems in good spirits even though he is minus a leg and has a fractured skull and crushed elbow. Saw James March 19. My driver took me out to the Ranger School, it was his birthday. I took him a cake. He was a tickled kid. They just brought in a boy from god awful canal with malaria. He sure is sick. Saunders (an undertaker in civilian life) is dedicated to him. He was dedicated to a Captain from the A. C. that died. We tease him ”˜cause he is an undertaker. I want to go over to the Leprosy ward. It”™s someday soon and will see little lepers. I have already taken care of some on this Isle. The Hawaiians seem to have it. The McCoy family on

this Isle (real well to do) seem to have leper relations. I have a German boy here now, in fact right next door. He is crying, had been hysterical all day, says the boys in the company tease him ”˜cause he”™s from Germany and he just cracked and can”™t take it, wanted to kill himself, which is a pleasant thought. I”™m glad it is himself he wants to kill, ”˜cause the “chink” I had in for a patient wanted to kill all nurses ”˜cause they made him take quinidine. He didn”™t hate nurses; he hated the doctors that made the nurses give him Quinn, so he was going to put an end to all matters. Our Indian Hart is now shipped off to Canton Isle, so he isn”™t bothering us for a while I hope. I believe I would rather have a jap in the same room other than Hart the Indian. As a matter

of fact I have a Jap up two doors from here. Uiki is his name, nice chap but ain”™t they all (oh god). They are now drafting the Japs of American born ancestry into the Army; yes they are playing it up big about their loyalty. Will we ever learn? Nope ah guess not. They even forget that Dec 7.1941 we were bombed and our boys died by pilots that were American born Japs that attended and graduated from our schools. McKinley High in Honolulu also was bombed, by probably one of its students and some of the bombers went to Oregon State I hear. Yes, bless the American Born Jap. Their eyes all slant the same way if you ask me. Madame Chun Ki Schools is now in the U.S. as a guest of the President. I have

heard her on a few occasions give a few words. She is a very remarkable woman indeed. Well the war is still a going strong, we have god awful canal now, one day the Russians have a city, then the next day Germany has it. So they swap back and forth. We retreat, then they retreat, all in a few days. Now the Army is going to change our uniforms, again. This make nine different ones in a year. Boy these new jobs sure take the cake, brown and white pin striped seersucker wrap around and brown hose and shoes and brown nurse”™s hat and the dress suit is in Olive drab. Oh boy, more money wasted, more goods wasted ”˜cause all the things we have now are useless. Boy if this Army would think more about winning than changing styles and

color I don”™t believe the war would last long. Well I give up trying to keep up with it and so has everyone else.
