DIARY: Tuesday January 19.1943

Tuesday January 19.1943
Dear Diary,

Sure wish ah could get in on this Air Evacuation service. We go down on Bombers and land on battlefields. Sometimes during a battle and bring back the wounded, sounds like fun. My weight is against me, 135 is the limit. I”™ll make it and starve too I

guess. Anyhow did weigh 156, now 138 -but at 138 I am awful hungry. I am beginning to look at people with that cannibal glare and they sure wish I would take to eating. Joe Braun was up here, sure laughed. He is a real trooper. Went to Hickam Field to the officer”™s club to a moonlight ball and banquet. Artie Shaw played, Jerry came after me, he had just come in from Hilo and he brought me three large orchids. Last week he gave me an orchid lei, three orchids in all, boy was I Miss Astor or something. After the dance we went downtown and had a hamburger with onions, we were in a command car and MP stopped us, said our lights were wrong, but Jerry (being transportation officer) talked his way out. Whew, thank goodness.

Went down and got a civilian paper today. Jr can”™t get off Monday on account of “man-overs” dern ”˜em and I go on night duty next month. Cheerful ole me, no?
