DIARY: Wednesday, December 30, 1942

Dear Diary, The planes are having fun today playing up there, some are sure pretty.

It”™s an air show here.
The Signal Corp came up and took pictures of our ward. The Col. congratulated us on our decorations. We made our own tree as Hawaii had no Christmas trees. Red candles, glass balls – green, red, blue and green branches around window, tree all blue lights. We gave the boys candy and then the Red Cross came up and gave out the presents. The Hawaiian troop sang carols. So we all had a fair Christmas I would say so.
The Marines have things well in hand at the Solomon”™s; but the things are bad in New Guinea. They need rain. They sure a taking a beating in the Jungles. The Japs are never

seen although they know they are there. It”™s an uncanny warfare and a dreadful one. Rode in the General”™s car today, then in a trunk and finally a Jeep. All in a day”™s work, but fun.
Well dear diary here ah is again. Now we get a raise they say, yep we are to be treated like officers, sure thing. Now we pay for everything and they are taking our beds from us (sheets and pillow cases too.) We pay for our laundry at 30 cents a uniform, $5 per month for a maid, apparently we can”™t clean our own rooms (our commanding officer would put us on the same level as a maid, but that”™s fine, so we hire a Jap maid, who gets $90 per month, more than we make.) There are 25 nurses here, we each pay $5 a month and she gets $90 who gets the rest? Not that”™s it”™s any of my business.

Just wonderful and now dues are coming up too. I thinks I”™ll get married, everyone else is. Guess I”™ll marry a draftee private; they are cute and much more fun.
Joe E. Braun came over here to our beautiful Isle yesterday, he was down at Tripler and he was in bed by one of our patients. The nurse was looking at his tonsils or anyway looking in his mouth, someone said wider Joey and he said “If I get it any wider you”™ll lose one G.I. Nurse.” He is coming here tonight. Holiday Inn with Bing Crosby is playing and I”™m working on A-2 so Miss Seabert can go.
The war is looking much better. Had a letter from the Aussie, he thinks between the Auzzies and the Yanks

we have those little yellow men (men did ah say, well ”˜er sure please! So surely) are wrapped up in a neat parcel. Am going to a moonlight dance at Hickam 1-19-43 to hear Artie Show play, he is here now. He was going to play sooner but a little sailor took him apart and he sorta had to recuperate. Some Jerry just came in from Hilo. He is flyer dear diary, said he had something for me, wonder what.
