LETTER: Tuesday, December 8, 1942
Tuesday, December 8, 1942
Dear Folks, Received your letter, long time no see, no hear, Yeah I heard from Virginia, she sent me a very nice picture of Jimmie and herself. He is a Captain now. Jimmie”™s brother is a Lt. on the same ship Jr is on and he is coming over to see me. Jr said he is real tall, dark and handsome.
Jr comes over whenever he can, but isn”™t here much of the time. I will tell you why I want to break from Johnnie, he is a Catholic and so you see? I go with a boy that plays in the orchestra here, a trombone player, rather cute in a homely way. Everyone calls him “Baby” looks a little like Harold, only real small. He has broadcasted a number of times for a mainland broadcast, over the Victory Jamboree. Do you ever hear any of these broadcasts? Every week we have two different broadcasts, one by the Hawaiians and one by the soldiers and sailors, of which they send back for rebroadcast on the Mainland. Jr wants to get a Black Hills Gold ring (size 9 1/2), will send check for it the 1st.
You ask what I want for Christmas. I”™ll take you both ok? Ha. Anyhow want a box of glass starch to fix my hats with and a Black Hills tie pin, for my tie, ”˜cause I can”™t keep It out of my soup. I want the plain one, no chain on it. Tell me how much they are and I”™ll send money. Now, I want a nice picture of you and Dad, something swanky see? That”™s an order and if I don”™t get it I warn you there will be trouble. Boy oh boy.
Do you ever listen to Red Skelton as the bad little boy? Boy I think he is a scream. Johnnie said I”™m just like him, he would. I got some Chinese slippers and Jap shoes to send to Elaine”™s kiddies. They are rather cute, thought I would buy them each a little Hawaiians shirt they ain”™t much. The shoes only 25 cents. They are wooden. I”™m sending you some to wear around the house and some for Dad they are real comfortable once you get used to them. That”™s all everyone wears here -the natives and Orientals -for dress and every day.
Jr said he read the booklet and really did appreciate it and to tell you thanks so very much. The picture was taken downtown and boy what a hot day. We were walking across the street toward the sun, when they snapped It. Sure took us by surprise. They have these photo snappers on the street corners. They snap your picture and then hand you a slip. Quite a graft but effective for all suckers with a curiosity. Say here is a cute tip to keep the salt running free in the shakers, just put some rice in the salt and it will take up the moisture. Also take your celery and put the cheese spread you buy in the glasses and stuff the celery and its really very good. And now before I forget, would you please send me the recipe for your salad dressing? You know Slip is coming over someday for a picnic and he wants potato salad. If and when we may manage to get a few potatoes. You know if I can get permission I am going to send you some sugar for I can”™t think of anything more useful at the present time. Some of the other girls are planning on the same providing we gain the permission.
Thank you so very much for the hose I appreciate them so much, I am working with a Doctor here now Lt. DeHans, who incidentally was an intern in Milwaukee Children”™s Hospital when I was there, rather cute kid, but he don”™t appeal to my sense of taste. I don”™t know what”™s wrong with me. Guess I”™m kind of mean, that”™s all we see here you know. Well bye now.
Aloha -AraBelle
