Letter: Thursday, October 8, 1942

Thursday, October 8, 1942
Dear Mums and Dad, Received your letter stating you haven”™t heard from me. There are some things we can”™t help you know, but never fear you”™ll hear soon ”˜cause letters have been sent. You know sometimes I get one of your letters and then the next day get four or five you sent three weeks before the one I received first, funny, but then if one waits long enough, one will get his mail (we hope).
Say, that Mr. Ackely, I can”™t place him. I had duty so couldn”™t talk very long. Guess he had quite a time trying to find me. I will admit it”™s quite complicated and then after you find a place, the question is, how can I get there? That”™s the whole secret; it”™s like trying to the reach the moon if you don”™t know the right angles.
Jr may come up and see me today, we are having war games as you will see by the paper, so that means we stay put here until it”™s all over, some fun. Yeah! Last night we got two potatoes and made french fries, pea soup, waffles and someone concocted a cake of a rare variety -made of rice and other unmentionables.
Aye! Saw a good show the other day, called Moon Tide. I want to see the one entitled 40,000 Horsemen. Also saw another good one, My Gal Sal. Where I work it”™s quite damp it”™s in a basement but it doesn”™t bother me. Everyone else has colds but shucks guess I”™m too slow to catch one. Um – could be!
You know I have a number of freckles on my arms, but one on my face, but still no tan. They call me pale face, but who wants to be black? Say did you ever get that other picture of me in that book? I sent one inside a Hawaiian book. We have been fortunate enough to hear the baseball and some football games direct from the states. Otherwise it”™s all canned music, but its music. Here we don”™t have to worry over station interference. We have two and that”™s the extent, sometimes we pull in other islands. My radio however gets the states after about 11 p.m. I can pick up about seven different places, but then it seems to come in waves so it can”™t be enjoyed very much. One thing we never have here is static. Come to think of it. I think the reason so many colds here is ”˜cause it”™s very hot outside and I mean hot, but the minute you are in the shade or inside its dern chilly, so the moral is wear nothing outside and put on your coat inside, funny world but ah loves it. Well so much for this dribble, do write soon.
Love to all Aloha ”“ AraBelle
