Dear Diary, Well I”™ve done flew the coop and now I am back at Tripler General Hospital now. Nothing cookin”™ only an alert started while at the show. They called out the 101st group; they say to be ready to go next morning. Well, we slept thru that with our clothes on, but
no fun. Then they thought we were getting some patients in, but they didn”™t come and incidentally that is the first alert that ever went on at night and came off at the same time within 24 hours.
Well there are battles raging here and there but none here. The Russians are rushing around and Hitler doing the same. The Marines have landed in the Solomon”™s and are giving ”˜em H!!!. Jr came in today after an absence of nine long months, sure good to see him, ”˜em!!! Guess they are on their way to Tokyo. Yep, guess he was right, as I see by the paper they are booming up the Gilbert and Marshalls. But the Russians are getting it in the neck as Hitler has dammed up the River and the Russians can”™t retreat. Ah well so goes this life. We have a pretty moon tonight, but I”™m
on night duty 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. but then it gives me something to do with my nights.
Gee I wish there weren”™t so many men here; gosh me no can make up my mind. I have however simmered it down to Johnnie, Peter Rabbit, Jr #1, Jr #2 and Jr #3. When a girl goes down to the streets of Honolulu, she gets the looks of many hungry wolves. But guess one can”™t blame the boys. In Australia there are plenty of girls. Stateside, no boys. Well someday ah hopes they get it all evened up. Well the island again has Negro troops here so now we have more blacker people. The population runs Negros, Hawaiians, Polynesians, Chink, Japs (169,000) Koreans and Pilipino (oh bother and that”™s a lot of slant.) Then we have the new race, known
as Pigeon English -half Hawaiian and half sailor or soldier -rather cute kids too. The peculiar thing is they turn out quite white, looking like a Portuguese. They are very proud and they think it an honor to have white blood. They marry for the duration and don”™t seem to mind when he goes back to mainland home, always he come back someday. No? Well, that”™s the “Hawaiian Marriage.”
No thanks brother, deliver me from any brown Kaniki beach boy, free walking down the streets of Honolulu. One sees and hears most anything in the street. The children have the vilest tongue, many are go getters and I do mean it. The street smells are awful but they say it becomes a habit; dern wish ah
had a “habitual” nose. The rainbows are beautiful, the sea is bluer than me, no kidding, no snakes here, but they still find one occasionally. The rain here is called “liquid sunshine,” the sun hot, shade cool, the Kona winds OK. The cockroaches are so big they just fly by and say, “Pardon me, I”™m the Chattanooga Choo Choo” and ah just don”™t agree, ”˜cause how would you like a nice rotten tomato in your pus, well brother rat that”™s a cockroach. The mosquitoes, well they have taken lessons from our air force. They come in “V” formation, but they always send out a “scout” and he comes down very bravely, lifts up your dog tags to see what your blood type is. I have a mosquito net. Every night I open the curtains to let all of ”˜em in, shut them in and
sleep outside on the floor, lovely place. Oh, by the way, ever get a centipede in your pants? Well if ever you do, you have a free ticket to Japan. No transportation needed. Most of the parks are now air raid shelters made of wood “a termite”™s heaven.”
