LETTER: Sunday, June 28, 1942

Sunday, June 28, 1942
Dear Folks, Just a line this evening. I have been, as the Army says, “Shootin”™ the breeze.” We of course have been talking war and to hear us, well we”™ve got the Japs licked; yup we licked ”˜em in about 1/2 hour, so no need to worry. Thought you would like to know.
Went to a dancing party and saw some big shots -a couple Admirals and one General. They wore beautiful orchid leis -one was of black orchids. I went with Jr who is the chap I”™m sending you the picture of.
By the way the surprise I told you about was Jr has made rank and is coming up for another and is a proud little monkey. Said he had me to thank ”˜cause I broke him of drinking, so he leveled down to business and studies. Well confidentially I”™m kinda proud of him too, but I wouldn”™t let him know. Nope. I”™m mean. But then who has more fun?
Still no word from Johnnie, he is on a pout, but he can get over it or stay that way. I”™m like Slip anymore; I just don”™t care about quibbling.
Was going on a picnic my next liberty but decided too many ants. Then we decided a day on the beach, but sun is too hot, sunburn over here in two minutes flat. We could go horseback riding only I have no slacks, so we decided on a show and I”™ll bet you we won”™t be able to get in, but we”™ll probably end in doing nothing by trying all day to find something to do.
A cockroach just ran over this very paper, but they are cute little fellows. They vary in size mere dots to flying elephants. Think I”™m foolin”™ you? Well if you wish I”™ll send you one of my best pals, by the name of Oscar. Here on the ward we leave the light in the kitchen on and that keeps them down some, but turn it off and they come by the thousands. Oh but ah loves them. No? Well so much for nonsense. Was feeling alone for some reason, maybe it”™s the beautiful music as they play here so thought I would drop a line.
Aloha – AraBelle
PS -Dad you”™re doing fine on your letters, I appreciate them so much.
