Dear Diary, Oh, what a day. I left for Fort Shafter, but no busses were running so I goes back to Leahi. In the meantime Jr was up to Leahi and then went out to Shafter. I must have passed him somewhere, but where? Well that”™s the question. I finally got in touch with the chief nurse and she said a truck will come up. Jr finally called and at last we made connections. He came up two minutes before the Army convoy. Jr gave me his picture. We didn”™t have much time, so they rode downtown with me. Me in the front, they in the back, ”˜cause

Of an Army regulation that says only two can sit in the front seat. We let them off at the back of the YMCA. Aloha and all. That”™s the last time I saw Jr as he left for the mainland a few days later. I finally arrived at the hospital. Miss Rockafellow the Captain and Miss Black met me. Into their offices I went -papers and questions, rules, regulations all this fired at me. Miss Christopherson gave me one of her pet Army hats and then took me to my new quarters, down; way down by the ambulance, HQ barracks D. Shall I ever forget it? Well my room had a bed, chair, small stand and one large open box for clothes. Well I guess I was sure tired. It was hot too. I did feel rather down in the dumps, but as I was sitting there in the dark (we don”™t have the

place blacked out yet) I began to plan on fixing the room up and then I felt better. While at dinner I met many new faces. Officers, nurses, everyone eats in the same place (but it”™s only temporary). Miss Rockafellow pinned on my Nurse Corps pin and 2nd Lt. Bar. Gee it was fun. They all are wearing gas masks. All seem happy. There are a lot of civilian nurses here too, just helping out. Most of them are wives of some of the officers. I went to work on Ward 23 under Miss Fermenski. She had three wards. She tried to show me what the rules were, it was all new and different. Gee, Army nursing is so much different. There is a lot of bookwork and when you admit a patient, boy you almost sign your life away.
