Saturday, December 13, 1941
Dear Diary, Today I heard from Jr. A small card, “I”™m OK don”™t worry, hope to see you soon.” Gee and I always thought the 13th was my unlucky
day, but no more. Am I happy, oh boy. Then I got my final papers, Uncle Sammy wants me and I am tickled pink. So I goes up with shaking knees to tell Miss Sinclair, my supervisor truly one of the grandest people I”™ve ever worked for. She was very sweet, was glad I have such an opportunity and she said I could always come back there and work. While waiting for my official orders. Jr. comes in with a friend and I was never so glad to see anyone in my life. Miss Sinclair invited both Juniors in for dinner and this was all too grand. I shall always remember, they had just finished a dinner downtown and they had to eat another. Oh well, so goes life for politeness sake.

Darn those Japs. When we get thru with them I hope their eyes are slanted the other way!!! And we”™ll set the darn rising sun. Darn, I always did hate the sun anyway, it only means get up and go to work and etc. So I”™m for it, let”™s set that rising sun. Oh yes I have an errand to do downtown. So down I go to the corner to tap a beer aye now. Now that war is here, we wear our uniforms and
during war time my are people ever good to us. They treat us like Queens, so enjoy it suckers, ”˜cause when it”™s over you will only be, “oh she”™s a nurse,” but now it”™s on a crowded bus “Here Miss is my seat” or In crossing a street the traffic actually stops and there you go very much embarrassed. Crossing at the smiling impatient traffic who would like to shoot you but don”™t dare. Why? Because this is war and war means injuries, death and destruction. So you go on smiling and being embarrassed by sham politeness but it is fun and it has advantages too. It saves the infernal waiting in line at the post office, bank and other places ”˜cause they know our time is limited, so the queen enjoys her new role and hurries back to her bedpans.
Oh, bless them.
Oh, here is my mission I went after:
